Online business has gotten a bad rap (especially in Naija) over the years.
Blame it on the “yahoo boys”.
Thankfully, that has changed, and people are beginning to realize that it is possible to legitimately make money through an online business.
However, some people still feel like online businesses are just “story for the gods“. Some even believe online businesses are just hobbies and a waste of time.
To the skeptics, naysayers, doubters, and “on-the-fence”-ers, this one’s for you.
The Top 6 Reasons to Start An Online Business Today.
It’s easy to shit on online businesses.
An ex-classmate once told me that Mark Zuckerberg and a bunch of other successful online entrepreneurs succeeded because they were lucky.
I was like forreal?
After arguing a bit, I found myself wondering if she was living in this same world we all live in, where random, everyday people start from scratch, set up online businesses and become successful.
I’m not saying it’s easy to set up an online business, cos it isn’t.
Just like with any thing worth doing in life, it’s tough to launch an online business and grow it. But that doesn’t make it any less real or impossible.
By the way, before you set up an online business, this post will show you 10 things you need to do.
Yes, online businesses are tough, but trust me, the upsides far outweigh the difficulty almost 10 to 1.
Pretty good odds, even if you don’t like to gamble.
The number one reason is Freedom
Aren’t you tired of having to wake up early, rush out trying to beat traffic and run to some office every freaking day, and sometimes even on weekends?
Do you enjoy having somebody else determine your schedule and your activities?
Are you not sick of having to take permission before you take that trip to London, or Paris, or Obudu Cattle Ranch, or even… anywhere?
I know I am.
With online businesses, that is not a problem.
Regardless of whether you’re a freelancer online, or you run a business that provides an online service or you sell a product online, you get to decide when you want to work, and when you don’t.
You can run your business from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a laptop, and a strong internet connection.
I mean, what’s not to like about that?
2. An Extra Source of Income
Even if you don’t want to quit your 9-5 job, there’s still merit to starting an online business.
If you’re in Naija, living through this time of change, you know damn well that your end-of-the-month pay check is not assured. And if you didn’t, let me be the first to let you know:
Your end of the month pay check is not assured!
Yes, you read that right.
If you’ve been watching the News (which I don’t, but I get my News from people who complain), Naija is in a funny state right now.
State Governments owing salaries of workers for almost a year, we don’t really know if we still have a President, etcetera shmetcetera.
I’m not one to focus on bad news, so I’ll stop there.
The fact is many of us aren’t getting paid at the end of the month. And even for those of us who do, by the time the salary comes in, we’ve spent it all because we borrowed money and have to pay back.
Now, some people would recommend you decrease your costs, live within your means, and basically do all the things that make you unhappy.
I’m not one of those people. I believe you should increase your capacity to earn and increase your sources of income.
An online business is a great way to do that. It also allows you to earn more while still keeping your day job.
Like my former group monitor would say: “If Anatomy no tidy me, Biochemistry go tidy me.”
If your day job no tidy you, online business fit tidy you.
3. A sense of Independence
I used to say this a lot at a time.
“Whether fuel price goes up or down, Dangote no dey sweat.”
When you have a profitable online business, no matter what happens at the day job, you’ll have a feeling of independence.
Knowing that you’ll be fine whether you resign today or get sacked or your salary isn’t paid is an amazing feeling.
This allows you to focus on doing a better job (at your day job), knowing that you’re doing it because it’s something you’re passionate about not something you have to do just to survive.
4. An endless pool of customers
You know how some businesses struggle among themselves just to get and keep customers?
Well, the beauty of online businesses is that your customer pool is not limited to one locale, state or country.
Granted, not everyone who uses the internet would be your target customer, but even if just 100,000 of those are your customers, and you sell your product for N1,000, that’s N100 million… which brings us to the next point.
5. The Internet is one of the fastest ways known to man to become a millionaire.
A few years ago, when people wanted to find a company that delivers a particular service, they checked some book or magazine that had different companies listed.
Nowadays, people just “google” it. Even the fact that “google” is now being used as a verb should tell you how powerful the internet is.
Because online businesses open you up to an endless pool of customers, you could reach them in a shorter amount of time than if you had to do that offline. And if you really wow these customers, your product/service could go viral.
The customers who like your product/service would tell their friends who would tell their other friends and before you know it, you have more customers than you know what to do with.
That, all things being equal, would translate to more sales, which means more $$$.
6. Low Barrier to Entry
When you want to start a typical “office-and-chair” business, there’s usually many things that come into play.
Like finding an office space, fixing it up to look nice, paying rent for the space, dealing with paper work and I’m developing a migraine just thinking about it.
With online businesses, the main thing you need to do is identify the service or product you want to provide, set up your website, create content and promote the shit out of your business till you start getting clients.
You don’t need any special permission to start an online business. Your room could be your office. Jeff Bezos started Amazon in his garage. Many other successful online businesses started off on kitchen tables and other home based locations.
You can start with what you have, right where you are.
And that’s why you should start an online business today.
Stop delaying. This is the best time to start that online business and start building your dream life.
And this post is over.
