Now, first off, why does your URL redirect to another URL ?
Why don’t you just use the new URL as your URL?
But I understand, it’s been like a month ago you posted the site for review so maybe that’s why.
I’m not going to do any “senrenre” in this review.
So let’s begin…
The Arewa Times Site Review
I’ve never really been a fan of Blogger, and your site is giving me more reasons why I shouldn’t dabble with it ever again. What is with that greyish, creamy background? It’s dull and unappealing. You really need to change that. stat.
Let’s get technical…
I. Design And Layout:
(i) Site Title
Sounds like a combination of Naija and Info. It’s great that you have one and that it matches your URL. Cool.
(ii) Your tagline
What does your tagline mean?
I know, you think it’s obvious, but it really isn’t. And it’s even a cliche, in a way.
“Your top Naija information portal”.
Everybody says that, in one way or the other. They also say “Your No. 1 source for [insert niche here]”.
The problem with the tagline is that it doesn’t tell your visitor what the benefit to him/her is. Fine, you make it clear that it’s about information, but what kind of information?
Your tagline isn’t clear enough. You need to make it clear what your site is about.
(iii) Your primary navigation menu
There are a lot of elements missing from your primary nav menu.
You have a “Home” element, “About Us”, “Sponsor Us” and “Contact Us” pages.
Where are your Categories and your Search Button/Field?
You need to have those Categories in your Primary navigation menu so visitors know exactly what kind of information they can expect on your site.
And the Search button so they can easily look for what they came for.
(iv) Right Side Bar
You need to restructure your right side bar.
First off, move your “Follow by Email” to the top part of the right side bar. Next, Trending posts, Categories, a Search Field but…
I don’t see a social media page or link here. This right side bar would be a nice place to place them, but we’ll talk about that later.
(v) Main Content Section
Your Main Content section looks okay.
The images aren’t too big and the snippet of the posts are great. Not too much info and just enough info.
There’s no big issue here.
(vi) Your Footer Section
I’m not a big fan of the vertical arrangement you have going on here.
The first line has the Facebook Like button, then the Categories and Pages. A better arrangement would have been to arrange them horizontally.
Also, you need to include a Search field here and social media account links.
I think you need to get clearer on who your target audience is.
I’m looking through your content and you write posts about available jobs and also write information about admission in various universities.
Now, that alone means you have two different kinds of people that will come to your site. The problem is your tagline doesn’t reflect that, which will make it hard for your prospective readers to know that your site is for them.
Also, looking through your headlines, the benefit to the reader is implicit, but somehow your headlines communicate it in a way that doesn’t connect emotionally.
Imagine a headline like “Don’t Miss This!! Admissions for So So and So University, Finally Open!!!”
Now, with a headline like that, isn’t it obvious that it charges you up emotionally?
Your headline should do that. It should make us want to click through.
Considering the niche you have chosen, your best bet for Promotion would be social media..
Facebook and Twitter are your best bet, speaking of which, I didn’t see any social media page links or share buttons.
You need to get those up ASAP and start promoting your content regularly.
IV. Monetization and Other Biz
If you get enough traffic, Adsense won’t be a bad idea, but since you also post job vacancies and scholarships, you also have the option of :
- Creating a guide on how to prepare for job interviews.
- Creating a guide for companies looking to hire quality employees and tell them what to look out for.
- Create a guide for people looking to get promotions/ better salaries at their places of work.
- Create a guide for people looking to get scholarships both in Nigeria and overseas.
Obviously, these guides would be for sale. But you’d have to create content that talks about topics in these guides to help build your status as an expert in this niche.
I would however recommend that you work on our design first, then figure out who your target audience is and optimize your content for them before you start heavily promoting your site.
Look into these and make changes and you’ll be solid.
P.S. If you’re reading this and you would like me to review your site, post it here.
